Laparoscopic Urology

Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure that employs fibre-optic instruments to inspect and operate on the organs inside the abdomen or the pelvic cavities. Through the use of fibre-optic technology, small incisions are made during the procedure and therefore it is low-risk and a minimally invasive operation.

Nephrectomy

A nephrectomy is the surgical removal of one kidney. There are two types of nephrectomy procedures:

  • Partial nephrectomy, where a surgeon removes only the diseased portion of the kidney. You may have an open partial nephrectomy or a laparoscopic
  • Radical nephrectomy, where a surgeon removes the entire kidney. Surgeons may also remove a section of the ureter (tube leading to the bladder), in a procedure called nephroureterectomy.
Pyeloplasty

Pyeloplasty is surgery to correct a condition called ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction. “Pyelo” refers to the kidney (renal pelvis). “Plasty” is the term for a surgical procedure that repairs, restores or replaces something.

Adrenelectomy

Adrenal glands are a pair of small glands just above each kidney that produce important hormones. Adrenal tumors are uncommon, and most are not cancerous. But tumors can cause adrenal glands to make too many hormones, causing troubling symptoms. Adrenalectomy is surgery to remove one or both adrenal glands.

What symptoms can adrenal problems cause?
  • Anxiety
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Headaches
  • Heart palpitations or rapid heart rate
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Excess weight (obesity)
  • Muscle weakness
